When the sun is strong and days are longer, pond ice may feel safe but the hardest ice is only on the surface.....'overnight ice'. As the sun softens the overnight ice, the entire ice sheet will weaken. In shallow ponds and lakes, ice beneath a snow layer becomes thinner even in moderately cold temperatures. The ice sheet near the pond's edge is also thinner due to shore vegetation.
